On a bright, sunny day, the sun shines approximately 1,000 watts of energy per square meter of the planet's surface, and if we could collect all of that energy we could easily power our homes and offices for free.
A lot of our light fittings are low energy lights, but solar power is even better as it requires no power to be drawn from the power grid at all.
It also has the advantage of not needing to be plugged in to a mains socket, so you can install solar lights where ever you like e.g. at the bottom of the drive, in the garden or in the shed or garage.
Most solar lights have an internal battery that is charged up during the day using a solar panel. As a battery can store a limited amount of energy, most solar lighting has a light sensor built in to prevent the light from coming on during the day, as this would be wasting the stored power. When darkness falls, the light is allowed to come on, using the power that has been stored up during the day.
As with all products that contain batteries, you must make sure that you dispose of it correctly to prevent the chemicals using in the battery escaping into the environment.
