Halogen spot bulbs produce a bright warm light. They are fully compatible with dimmer switches.
This is a dichroic lamp that is designed to reflect the heat backwards into the light fitting and the light forwards. Make sure that you choose the right sort of lamp for your fitting. Aluminium lamps reflect the heat forward out of the fitting. See the related products tab for more options.
These bulbs are in no way low energy. At 20 watts each they use quite a lot of power, so you should only really use them if you have to. You should also consider the low energy alternatives - see the related products tab for more options.
There is a low energy 7w bulb that is exactly the same size as this 20w halogen bulb, and an 11w version that is slightly longer. The only three reasons that we know of not to use the low energy versions are:
1. You need to be able to dim the lights using a dimmer switch
2. The slightly reduces light output from the 7w lamp is not bright enough and the slightly larger 11w version will not physically fit in your light fitting.
3. You happen to be able to produce all your own electricity from green energy sources (solar, wind etc) and don't mind using more than you need to
It's true the the low energy alternative lamps are more expensive to buy, but when you consider that they have a life of 8,000 hours (compared with 2000 hours for this halogen lamp) and will use up to 80% less electricity, this more than justifies the extra up-front cost.
