Replacement bulbs > Spot bulbs > Screw capped
Screw capped spot bulbs also run at mains voltage. They are available in a range of sizes with variety of different screw caps. They are used in surface mounted fittings, recessed downlights and outdoor lighting.
The name of the bulb is determined by the diameter of the reflector part of the bulb. 'R' bulbs are descibed in mm, e.g an R80 bulb has a diamater of 80mm. The less common Par bulbs are described in 8ths of an inch, e.g. a Par38 bulb is 38 x 8ths of an inch.
R39 spot bulbs have a diameter of 39mm at the widest point. They have an E14 / SES (small screw) cap.
R50 spot bulbs have a diameter of 50mm at the widest point. They have an E14 / SES (small screw) cap.
R63 spot bulbs have a diameter of 63mm at the widest point. They have an E27 / ES (Edison screw) cap.
R80 spot bulbs have a diameter of 80mm at the widest point. They have an E27 / ES (Edison screw) cap.
Par spot bulbs are most commonly found in large diameters and are often used as outdoor or garden flood lights. They are also available in smaller sizes, which are less common.
Par lamps generally have a fairly flat face, when compared with the 'R' lamps which usually have a more dome shaped front face.
