Savings calculator

This savings calculator is to compare a standard product with it's energy saving, equivelant, so find out how much you will save each year with the energy efficient alternative.

It can be hard to work this out manually, becasue the energy efficent version of a product is usually more expensive to buy in the first place, but then uses much less power duing use.

Power and time

To calculate how much it costs to run your products, we need to know how much time you use them for, and how much your eletricity costs.

Price of your electricity per kilowatt hour (pence)

You should be able to find the price per kwh on your electricity bills. It's is sometimes complicated with some electricity tarrifs that have a changing rate depending on how much you use.

We've started with 12p per kwh as this is a good average price for the UK

Average use of this product per day (hours) A light in a main living room, or kitchen in the UK, is used for an average of 5 hours per day throughout the year. Bathrooms, bedrooms etc. use lighting less than this.

Standard product vs Energy saving alternative

  Standard product Energy efficient version
Purchase price (pounds) This is the amount that you pay to buy the product

'normal' spot light bulbs will usually have a life of between 2000 and 5000 hours.

The expected product life is usally printed on the packaging.
